Students analyse the physical features of a group of animals and use that information to classify the animals as fish, amphibians, reptiles or mammals.
Learning object description:
Students sort animals into groups based on their physical features. For example, they identify a group of animals that have a backbone, then identify a subset with slimy skin. They work through a list of features to classify animals and identify a given vertebrate: fish, amphibian, reptile or mammal. This learning object combines four objects in the same series.
Key learning objectives:
Students compare the physical characteristics of a range of animals and identify which is a given vertebrate: fish, amphibian, reptile or mammal.
Students identify a set of physical features common to a class of vertebrates.
Students recognise that some features are shared by different animal types, and other features are specific to a class.
Educational value:
The learning object:
introduces features that are common to classes of vertebrates;
enables students to group animals according to their physical features;
enables students to analyse the physical features of a group of animals and use that information to distinguish which is a given type of vertebrate: fish, amphibian, reptile or mammal;
enables students to choose questions that help to distinguish a class of vertebrates from other animals.
