Trying to determine a course of action that will meet the demands of stakeholders with conflicting interests is hard work. Students are provided with an opinion organiser that allows them to measure and compare the worth of different courses of action to dissenting groups in a local community.
Learning object description:
Students are immersed in the issues surrounding the development of a tourist resort in a coastal town. Some residents are concerned about the effect the resort will have on the local environment, while others welcome the jobs and the money the resort will bring to the community. Students gather facts and opinions from residents, environmentalists and park management. They compare options, then choose the plan that best addresses issues raised by all of the interest groups. Finally they explain the reasons for their recommendation. This learning object is one in a series of four objects.
Key learning objectives:
Students compare the merits of a number of solutions to a series of conflicts between various interest groups and stakeholders in a local community.
Students recommend and justify a solution that achieves the most favourable outcome for all interest groups and stakeholders.
